Cookie Policy (EU)

1. What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that the websites you visit send to your device, where they are stored and sent back to the same websites on later visits. Other technologies work in a similar way, such as the browser’s local storage (localStorage) and requests to third-party servers: where they are used, this document describes them together with cookies.

This document lists by name the cookies actually found on www.osservatoriomashrek.com, with the lifetime read from the browser. The last check was carried out on 9 October 2026, from a browser in Italy, not signed in to any Google, Vimeo or Amazon account.

2. How to manage your consent

On your first visit a notice offers three choices:

  • Accept cookies: allows the visit statistics and the embedded content described in sections 4 and 5;
  • Deny: only the technical cookies in section 3 are used;
  • View preferences: lets you choose by category (Statistics, Marketing) and confirm with Save preferences.

Closing the notice with the X means not giving consent. Until you make a choice, the site sets no statistics cookies and loads no embedded content.

You can change or withdraw your choice at any time with the “Manage consent” button at the bottom of every page. After withdrawal, from the next page onwards Google Analytics is no longer contacted and videos are blocked again. Cookies already set stay in the browser until they expire, but this site no longer feeds them: to remove them immediately you can use your browser settings (section 9).

3. Technical cookies

They are needed for the site to work, for its security, or to record your consent choice, and do not require consent (Article 122 of the Italian Data Protection Code).

The site does not offer to save a commenter’s name and email for later visits: commenting sets no cookie.

4. Analytics cookies

They are set only with consent to the Statistics category.

Visit statistics are collected with Google Analytics 4, a service of Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. They show how many people visit the site and which pages they read. Google Signals is not active and the property is not linked to Google Ads: visit data is not associated with visitors’ Google accounts and is not used for advertising.

_ga_YYFZ9DD41Qfirst-party cookie (Google Analytics).osservatoriomashrek.comKeeps the state of the visit session400 days

Without consent, Google Analytics is not started: it sets no cookies and receives no data about the visit.

5. Videos and embedded content

Some articles contain videos or previews hosted by other services. They are loaded only with consent. Without consent, a box with a button appears in their place: pressing it accepts the whole category the content belongs to, and from then on all content in that category is loaded. Until the content is loaded, the site does not contact the service’s servers: the preview image shown in the box is a copy kept on this site.

5.1 YouTube (Marketing category)

A service of Google Ireland Limited. When the player loads, YouTube sets its own cookies and also contacts Google’s advertising servers (doubleclick.net).

If you are signed in to your Google account in the same browser, Google may recognise you, in accordance with its privacy policy.

5.2 Vimeo (Statistics category)

A service of Vimeo.com, Inc., 330 West 34th Street, New York, United States. Vimeo videos belong to the Statistics category: they are loaded when that category is accepted, the same one as Google Analytics. Pressing the button on a Vimeo video box therefore also turns on the visit statistics in section 4.

cf_clearance and __cf_ob appear only when Vimeo puts the browser through a security check, as happened during our verification. Vimeo processes data in accordance with its privacy policy.

5.3 Kindle book preview (Marketing category)

A service of Amazon Europe Core S.à r.l., 38 avenue John F. Kennedy, Luxembourg. The preview sets no cookies (verified on loading). Once loaded, the browser connects to Amazon’s servers (leggi.amazon.it, m.media-amazon.com, images-eu.ssl-images-amazon.com, fls-eu.amazon.it, unagi.amazon.it) and to the error-reporting service used by Amazon (bugsnag.com), which receive the visitor’s IP address. Amazon processes data in accordance with its privacy notice.

6. What the site does not use

The site uses no advertising or profiling cookies of its own and carries no advertisements. The links to Facebook and X on its pages are plain links: nothing is loaded from the two networks until you follow them. Fonts are not requested from Google.

7. Services that connect without setting cookies

These services set no cookies on your device, but receive the visitor’s IP address, as happens with any resource loaded from another server.

  • Cloudflare, a service of Cloudflare, Inc.: all pages of the site are delivered through its network, which protects them from attacks and speeds up loading.
  • Google Tag Manager, a service of Google Ireland Limited: on every page the component that starts Google Analytics only after consent is loaded from www.googletagmanager.com. On its own it sets no cookies and collects no statistics.
  • Google reCAPTCHA, a service of Google Ireland Limited, to tell people apart from automated programs: it connects to www.google.com, www.gstatic.com and fonts.gstatic.com. On articles it protects the comment form and sets the _GRECAPTCHA cookie listed in section 3. On the Contact pages it protects the form and sets no cookies, either when the page opens or while the form is being filled in (verified without submitting the form). It is described in the privacy policy.

8. Transfers outside the European Union

Google, Cloudflare, Vimeo and Amazon may transfer data to the United States. Google LLC, Cloudflare, Inc., Vimeo.com, Inc. and Amazon.com, Inc. participate in the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, recognised as adequate by the European Commission in its decision of 10 July 2023.

9. How to manage cookies from your browser

Besides the consent notice, cookies can be viewed, blocked and deleted from your browser settings:

If you block all cookies the site keeps working, but the consent notice will reappear on every visit, because it cannot remember your choice.

10. Data controller and contacts

The data controller is Nino Orto, Largo Don Minzoni 1, 95047 Paternò (CT), Italy, email [email protected].

For how to exercise your rights, retention periods and other information on the processing of personal data, see the privacy policy.
