I riflettori internazionali continuano ad essere puntati sullo Stato Islamico e la situazione sempre più catastrofica del conflitto siriano. In Iraq, tuttavia, la popolazione civile continua a morire nella più totale indifferenza.

Secondo i dati del governo iracheno, nel 2014 le violenze in Iraq hanno causato la morte di almeno 15.538 civili e personale di sicurezza, più del doppio rispetto ai 6.522 del 2013, e vicino ai 17.956 morti del “biennio di sangue” del 2006-2008, uno dei periodi più sanguinosi della storia recente dell’Iraq, durante l’apice delle violenze interconfessionali tra sciiti e sunniti.

Con milioni di sfollati interni, minoranze a rischio, crescenti tensioni intraconfessionali, e il rischio sempre presente di una guerra civile tra le principali comunità del paese, il 2015 si presenta anche peggio.

“Ancora una volta, il cittadino iracheno continua a soffrire per la violenza ed il terrorismo nel Paese. Questo è un triste stato di cose”, ha dichiarato l’inviato delle Nazioni Unite in Iraq, Nickolay Mladenov.
